The Hand Project: More than a team event

Further education and training courses are held at Timmer on a regular basis. We want to give our employees the opportunity to develop and strengthen the cooperation within the team. In mid-September, a special team event was organised that touched us all. "The Hand Project". 19 managers from Timmer participated in this teambuilding event.

What is the background to "The Hand Project"?

Especially in developing countries, there is little to no provision of prosthetic hands for the disabled. Besides accidents and congenital anomalies, landmines are one of the main causes for the loss of a hand. It is estimated that there are currently more than 100 million active land-mines worldwide. A landmine explodes every 60 minutes. Children are particularly affected, as they step on mines or pick them up with curiosity while playing or tending to their animals.

Success through communication and cooperation

After an impressive video presentation on the topic by Chris Gulley, the founder of "The Hand Project", it was the task of the leaders to produce prosthetic hands in small teams: Performing manual tasks with only one hand? What seems impossible at first glance is quite feasible: With good teamwork and a lot of communication. In teams of three to four people, the participants assembled the prostheses. One hand of the participants was voluntarily "immobilised" during the three-hour action, so that everyone could put themselves in the situation of the prosthesis recipient.

At the same time, it was only possible to complete a functional prosthesis with close cooperation and permanent exchange of information.

A task that not only draws attention to the situation of people with disabilities and promotes empathy. It also strengthened teamwork. "It is great to see how closely the colleagues work together. We are enthusiastic about the aid organisation's commitment and are happy to be part of the project," was the conclusion of the participants.

The costs for the prosthesis kits and the event were borne by our company. A successful event: "The Hand Project" combines successful team building with social commitment. At the end, we held five functional prostheses in our hands that will make everyday life easier for people.

The first recipients have received their prostheses. We wish them the necessary strength and endurance to master their everyday life with their new prosthesis.
