Timmer double diaphragm pumps
optimise wood coating at EGGER

25.12.2025 | Reading time: 5 minutes

Wood products are subject to a wide range of requirements. In order to meet the quality standards of processors and end users, they must be visually appealing and pleasant to the touch, as well as robust, durable and easy to maintain. Wood coating plays a special role here, as it ensures durability and a flawless surface appearance.
A decisive factor for the success of wood coating is the quality of the fluid pumps used. Modern double diaphragm pumps achieve clean results and enable the resource-saving use of paints and varnishes.

This is precisely why wood-based materials manufacturer EGGER GmbH invested in high-quality pump technology from Timmer at its Brilon site back in 2014. With these quality products "Made in Germany", our customer achieves uniform coatings of the highest quality while also benefiting from smooth operating processes thanks to the reliable performance and easy maintenance and cleaning of our pumps.

Modern double diaphragm pumps from Timmer ensure efficient wood coating, uniform surfaces and optimised production processes at EGGER Holzwerkstoffe GmbH.

Efficiency and precision in wood coating:

Wood-based materials manufacturer EGGER relies on double diaphragm pumps from Timmer to optimise coating processes, save energy and achieve uniform surfaces of premium quality.
• EGGER relies on double diaphragm pumps from Timmer to achieve consistently uniform, high-quality surfaces in wood coating.
• The pump technology ensures reliable coatings without shadowing, bubble formation or microfoam.
• A low start-up pressure and up to 50 per cent less compressed air consumption enable particularly energy-efficient processes.
• Ceramic valves, the short-stroke principle and a maintenance-friendly design "Made in Germany" increase service life and minimise downtime.

With Timmer's pump technology, EGGER is increasing efficiency, quality and sustainability in wood coating – a solution that sets standards in the industry.

EGGER wood products impress with their look and feel, are robust, easy to maintain and benefit from efficient coating processes using Timmer pumps.

What does EGGER Holzwerkstoffe GmbH do?

The family-owned company EGGER Holzwerkstoffe GmbH headquartered in St. Johann, Austria, is one of the largest and most renowned manufacturers of wood-based materials in Europe.

Wood-based materials are industrially manufactured materials made from wood or wood components – for example, by gluing, pressing or bonding pieces of board, veneers, fibres or wood chips. These include solid wood materials as well as chipboard, fibreboard and composite boards.

The materials are used in the furniture industry, interior design and the construction industry, for example.

At EGGER, precise wood coating ensures durability, a flawless surface appearance and high-quality wood products.

CHALLENGES SUCCESSES
• High-quality, uniform wood coatings • Flawless results
• Resource-saving use of the media to be applied • Less material consumption
• As few process interruptions as possible due to maintenance, cleaning, operating errors, etc. • Reliable operation
  • Simple and quick maintenance and cleaning
  • Long-lasting solution thanks to high-quality technology
The coating of wood panels in painting systems consists of various process steps: 1. Pre-painting: First, a primer is applied and cured. 2. Sanding: The wood material is then sanded to create a smooth surface. 3. Finishing: The wood is then finished with trendy decors and surfaces.

Primer, paint, varnish or undercoat are applied to the wood-based material using an application roller. The fluid pump ensures that the medium flows evenly between the application rollers. The pumps previously used by EGGER did not have the desired service life and sometimes caused shadows or bubbles on the wood surfaces due to higher pulsation. That is why EGGER decided in 2014 to invest in new coating technology and chose Timmer's double diaphragm pumps.

Another advantage is the sustainable use of materials. The pumps operate in a circulating system: the medium is pumped between the application roller and the metering roller, while excess material flows back into the container and is reused. The circulation system means that no material is lost and EGGER saves costs.

The Timmer pumps use control valve technology developed by us. This enables lower pulsation. "High pulsation often results in an uneven paint finish, which causes shadows to form on the wood-based material." - Stephan Rehker, coating technologist at EGGER Holzwerkstoffe GmbH. Thanks to the valve's fast switching times and the short-stroke principle, the pump runs much more smoothly and consistently. The medium flows evenly and finely through the roller. This means that, unlike other models on the market, the pump can deliver even minimal amounts of liquid. "It is particularly important to our customers that the wood surface always looks the same – with even paint application, uniform layer thickness and consistent colour. The high reproducibility that the pumps enable is therefore of crucial importance to us." - Stephan Rehker, Paint Technologist at EGGER Holzwerkstoffe GmbH.

The Timmer solution means that EGGER has far less microfoam in its lacquer system. This can lead to the formation of small air bubbles, which distort the surface finish. "The advantage is that there is no need to use an additive, which protects the entire tubing and lacquer flow. Now we don't have to add anything and can work without foam. Even with low-viscosity liquids or lacquers, the medium splashes significantly less thanks to the Timmer pumps." - Stephan Rehker, Lacquer Technologist at EGGER Wood-based Materials GmbH.

Our pumps are designed to prevent downtime, as we use a special, particularly low-wear ceramic latching valve. All valve plates at the heart of the Timmer pump are made of ceramic in combination with finely ground sliders made of high-performance plastics. This results in minimal wear on the valve itself. In addition, a short-stroke principle is used, in which the diaphragm performs shorter strokes and is therefore protected. A flow monitor also indicates when no more paint is being pumped – a customer-specific function specially designed for EGGER. This prevents the application roller from running dry.
Another advantage: our double diaphragm pumps are exceptionally easy to maintain thanks to their simple design. As the valve is separated from the medium, the diaphragms can be quickly replaced during maintenance without necessarily having to replace the air valve. Ball replacement and cleaning are also particularly easy. If a pump needs to be serviced, it can be removed or dismantled very quickly and easily. "The pumps are so low-maintenance that they sustainably increase process efficiency in our production and thus reduce costs in the long term." - Stephan Rehker, Coatings Technologist at EGGER Holzwerkstoffe GmbH.

Timmer double diaphragm pumps impress with low start-up pressure and compressed air consumption.

Timmer double diaphragm pumps are particularly energy efficient:

Pump technology for wood coating: a comparison

Conventional pumps Timmer pumps
start-up pressure 1.5 to 2 bar 0.7 bar, process-safe from 1 bar
compressed air Up to 50 per cent less → significant energy savings in the medium and long term

Another advantage is the sustainable use of materials. The pumps operate in a circulating system: the medium is pumped between the application roller and the metering roller, while excess material flows back into the container and is reused. The circulation system means that no material is lost and EGGER saves costs.

Thanks to fast switching times and the short stroke principle, the Timmer pump generates minimal pulsation, ensuring that paints and varnishes flow evenly through the application roller – for optimal wood surfaces.
